About

Hello, I am Ori Idan

A writer, Skipper and Free software enthusiast.

One of the most important things for me is freedom, that is why I like free software. For me free software is not a technical thing but a philosophical method.

I am also a novelist, it started when I wanted to write a short story to explain the philosophy of free software. I found out that I am not good at short stories and started writing novel, my first novel was “Born free”, published in print by Pardes publishing house in Israel. Following my first novel I began writing my second novel “New sunrise” that was also published in print by Pardes. Both novels are written in Hebrew (my mother tongue).

Selling books in Israel is not easy and thus both novels hardly covered the expenses to publish them so I started a website http://www.thestories.org and published more stories there. Later on I learned about the EPUB file format for digital publishing and wrote my own EPUB generating scripts to convert some of my books to EPUB and today anyone can download for free 3 novels in Hebrew.

However, philosophy and (novel writing in Israel) will not by itself buy you food so there are other things I do:

  • Embedded system consulting – I am helping organisations to build devices based on 8,16 and 32 bit CPU’s.
  • Embedded system software – After building the system we need software for it… I am writing software for the following families of processors: Atmel AVR, TI MSP430, NXP 8051, Microchip PIC, ARM, PowerPC etc.
  • Linux and embedded Linux consulting – Linux is a good example of free software that is being used in more and more areas of computing. I am consulting and writing Linux software for every purpose and especially embedded systems. Since I started from hardware and software for real time system, it is only natural that I will use Linux for embedded system.
  • Web systems programming – Although different from my other expertise, this is something I am doing for the last 10 years or so. I started with building my own websites, and thus learned languages such as PHP and Perl used in web programming, embedding this with databases I know from my experience with Linux, I can build web systems from simple systems such as content management systems to complex accounting and e-commerce systems.

I’ve just found your blog and note the English and Hebrew versions. Excellent! You write about topics I’m familiar with and use words I would likely need to know if I ever wanted to speak modern Hebrew. I’m always excited when I find new bilingual resources. Thanks for this.
